The Sun interview

I have the honor of being the designated interviewee in the March issue of The Sun magazine. The interview, by Arnie Cooper, covers a lot of ground, and it’s been posted in its entirety on The Sun’s site. Here’s a taste: Cooper: Do you think computers have harmed our relationship with nature? Carr: I certainly think theyve gotten in the way of our relationship to nature. As we increasingly connect with the world through computer screens, were removing ourselves from direct sensory contact with nature. In other words, were learning to substitute symbols of reality for reality itself. I think…

The new flagship Green Depot retail store, located on the Bowery, is the Brooklyn-based companys first foray into retail destination. 5 + 1 reasons to stay away from podcasting

Filed Under (Internet Business) by Admin on 25-02-2009

There are lots of pages online to tell you why to podcast. Let me show you the other side.

Why not to Podcast:

  • Reason 1: Search engines cannot read podcast content. If you cannot write transcription of the podcast, there are fewer chances of your podcasts getting very popular among search engines for targeted keywords.
  • Reason 2: The average incoming link ROI is much less than what you could get if an article in your website or blog received the same popularity.
  • Reason 3: If you are just turning your blog post into a podcast, chances are less that it will become popular. People normally love to listen to programs like talk shows or hosted music programs (film clips, songs etc. are excluded from podcast category). For example, if you are publishing Seth Godins interview as a podcast in your blog, it is more likely to gain popularity rather than just another post of your blog.
  • Reason 4: People normally scan through webpage content. The podcasts do not offer them such flexibility of consumption.
  • Reason 5: Every medium have their own set of rules. A good writer may not be a great oral communicator. If your friends think that you are better with written text than voice, it is better to listen to them. The same rule applies to writing mode or style of the script.
  • Reason 6: I will keep this point open for the readers. Please write your comment on podcasting and fill this position.

The free arts and the servile arts

I have taken it upon myself to mash up the words of Steve Gillmor, posted yesterday at TechCrunchIT, and the words of Andrew Louth, published in 2003 at the Times Higher Education site: Gillmor: Were at the threshold of the realtime moment. The advent of a reasonably realtime message bus over public networks has changed something about the existing infrastructure in ways that are not yet important to a broad section of Internet dwellers. The numbers are adding up 175 million Facebook users, tens of thousands of instant Twitter followers, constant texting and video chats among the teenage crowd….
